Panasonic Shaver Review-Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc IV Rechargeable Shaver
The Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc IV Multi Flex Nano Shaver reminds me of that old, silly adage that goes something like this: everything that can be invented has been invented. True, this Panasonic is an electric shaver that inhabits the same basic technical world as dozens of others have for the last forty years—but rest assured, it’s taken a few leaps forward.
What are some of those leaps? Well, a sonic vibration mode that heightens its cleaning power, for one. Also, it has one of the best ergonomic designs of any electric shaver. Its designers also figured out a way to make the shaving head large while keeping the body small. And a Power Lock switch so that it doesn’t accidentally turn on in a briefcase or suitcase. (How many times have you been left powerless at a crucial moment?)
With so many brands and models to choose from today, it isn’t a bad idea to make yourself a ‘consideration’ list to try to identify which new shaver you’ll use because it makes you want to shave, and which one you’ll use only because you have to shave.
Consider the following:
- The blade system
- The motor system
- The battery system
- The wet/dry system
- The cleaning system
- The little extras that always come in handy
The Blade System
The Panasonic ES-LA63-S has four cutting blades, called Arc blades, inside of its ultra-thin, pivoting foils. Anyone who has shaved with an electric razor is familiar with those cylindrical foils that have dozens of little holes. That’s where stubble goes in and never comes out. The up-and-down pivoting action enables the foils to move around a bit as the head glides over your face, neck or head, so that your individual facial lines and angles still get as close a shave as possible.
Like other shavers in the Panasonic family, the blade system is called a nano system, meaning that its designers and engineers found a way to make very small parts do very big jobs with precision and reliability. The nanotech blades on this shaver are positioned at 30 degrees, which more or less is viewed as an exceptional angle for the best shaving conditions.
The Motor System
It’s fast. It spins at 14,000 rpm, and I think it’s fairly common knowledge that the faster a shaver motor spins, the more effective it will be at snipping off those pesky whiskers. Panasonic actually says that it’s the world’s fastest electric shaver motor, and there’s no reason to question that claim. Not only that, but there are two of them—two motors—one that directs the blades side to side and another that directs them up and down. It’s called a linear motor system, which basically means that it distributes its power evenly throughout the head assembly for a consistent shave. And a consistent shave will lower the number of passes you have to make over any one spot to get it baby-skin smooth.
The Battery System
It is powered by a rechargeable battery that lasts for at least five long shaves on a single charge, which is about a week’s worth for those of us who might ‘forget’ to shave on weekends. While that’s not as long as some of the other shavers in its class, at the very least it tends to put us get on a consistent, once-a-week schedule of charging so that we never forget. It recharges quickly, too.
The Wet/Dry System
Electronic shaving today is an anywhere affair, and that includes the shower. (Most users would remind you that using it in the shower requires a little gel or lather on your face to make it more effective.) On this model, the blades and motors are as efficient over the bathroom sink as they are under the shower head.
The Cleaning System
If you put the shaver under a running faucet, a sonic vibration, combined with the action of the water, clears away all the stubble. No more digging around with a tiny brush and blowing little hairs into your face just to get it clean.
The Little Extras
It has a bright green 10-stage LCD that displays battery charge status, a reminder of when to do some manual cleaning and when to change the foils. It has a good old-fashioned pop-up trimmer (no need for a giant technological leap here, I suppose), a handy storing-docking-cleaning unit and, at just 7 ounces, a lightweight design. One Amazon consumer (of several that helped get it a 4½ star rating) said that “it melts in like a custom glove and is a natural to handle.”
Listing at $299.99, though available for the astute shopper for less either at Amazon , the Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc IV Multi Flex Nano Shaver is a good investment in state-of-the-art wet/dry shaving.
