Meet our vote for best shaver, Panasonic ES-LA93 Electric Shaver . Sometimes it almost sounds like a cliché when a manufacturer touts its product’s Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval.

But it’s really not. The Panasonic ES-LA93 wet/dry shaver won the seal—along with a good product designation from Men’s Health magazine—and user reaction has justified it. For the price, you want a shaver that shaves as close as possible and lasts as long as possible.

Apparently, Panasonic is proving it’s entirely possible.

The ES-LA93 has four cutting blades, which are said to maximize facial coverage, increase comfort, and even reduce shaving time. Panasonic was also one of the pioneers of technology that allows an electric shaver to be fully immersed in water. It can be used in the shower and even cleaned by placing it under the tap.

The Importance of A-Contours, B-Foils, C-the Motor

Most veterans of the shaving world are familiar with those vibrating outer foils that are part of the design of a large number of the electric shavers on the market. They’re the hole-pocked surfaces that actually touch the face, where the hairs slip into to get chopped away by the blades.  The foils on the ES-LA93 are ultra thin, and the arc blades are called multi-fit. A linear motor inside the head produces a very rapid side-to-side motion, and a second motor does the same thing up and down.

Combined, the foil, blade and motor system a) follows the contours of your face, b) finds all the hairs that come through the foils—which are just about all of them, even those lying flat—and lop them off effortlessly and stinglessly.

c) The motors, incidentally, are patented by Panasonic and vibrate at 14,000 rpm. The head itself also moves as you shave, providing even extra ‘contour’ coverage for any face, neck or head that wants to give it a run for the money.

Two more things about the blades: According to Panasonic, they are nano-tech blades, which means they were precision engineered to do a huge job despite their small size, and they are positioned at a 30-degree angle within the heads, which technical studies show is the best angle for close, even shaves.

Its Automatic Self-Cleaning & Charging base is not dissimilar from the bases of other shavers in this manufacturer’s line, and that may be due to the fact that Panasonic and most of its shaver consumers find it perfectly acceptable.  In fact, there seem to be far, far fewer consumer concerns regarding the base of the ES-LA 93 than with some of its shaver cousins in the line. It uses long-lasting, replaceable cleaning cartridges that help keep the blades clean and lubricated (which, of course, can be used in conjunction with the under-the-faucet cleaning previously mentioned). The base also has a dryer function and a cleaning status indicator.

No Shame In Being A Three Minute Man?

A fully charged battery will last approximately 45 minutes (more than a dozen shaves for most people), and a full recharge will take an hour. It also has an automatic dual voltage conversion feature for the international traveler.

In or out of the shower, shaving cream or gel works great with the shaver, particularly for those who may desire a little extra protection from the up and down and round and round action of a vibrating machine on their faces. “I put some warm water on my face, applied some gel I purchased for sensitive skin—and the shaver did the rest,” commented one consumer on Amazon.com, where the ES-LA 93 received 4½ stars out of five. “It zipped through my beard and didn’t leave any uncut hairs.”

And here’s another comment from someone who never feels done: “I am a seven-to-nine minute shaver. Always have been an over-shaver. Never feel done. With this unit I start feeling ‘done’ three minutes in.” Less time shaving, more time living—and more time between recharges.

Final Touches

The Panasonic ES-LA 93 also has a pop-up trimmer for sideburns, beards and moustaches, a switch lock button to eliminate accidental turn-on during travel or when storing it away, and, in an affectionate nod to a final cliché, an easy grip ergonomic design: a solid, thick body with a contoured midsection for an undemanding and solid grab

Although the way it works is first and foremost in just about every purchaser’s mind, the way it looks seems to influence more than a few people—and the Panasonic ES-LA 93 Wet/Dry 4-Blade Shaver has actually been called ‘a thing of beauty.’
